Field Investigation

SPC Geotechnical, Inc. has extensive experience in all phases of field exploration, ranging from site reconnaissance to obtaining high quality samples for soil evaluation and testing, landslide evaluation, and groundwater monitoring.

Photo documentation, detailed description of features encountered, and field mapping are routinely performed during site reconnaissance as deemed necessary.

Soil sampling, down-hole logging, and visual and tactile methods are employed in the field to classify the soils, identify subsurface features, and establish the subsurface stratigraphy. Soil sampling can be continuous or at frequent depth intervals. Soil sampling and storage conform to ASTM standards.

To monitor groundwater levels, piezometers are typically installed. Slope or landslide movement is monitored through the installation and use of inclinometers.

Laboratory Testing

Laboratory testing is essential in identifying the strength and index properties of the sampled soils. Those provide the bases for our analyses, conclusions, and recommendations. SPC Geotechnical, Inc. provides full geotechnical testing services in our own laboratory, which is inspected, accredited, and certified by agencies such as the City of Los Angeles. Laboratory testing is performed under the direct supervision of a professional engineer. Some of the routine soil testing performed in our laboratory is listed below.

  • Moisture Content/Dry Density

  • Soil Classification

  • Maximum Dry Density

  • Percent Passing #200 Sieve

  • Sieve Analysis

  • Hydrometer Analysis

  • Sand Equivalent

  • Atterberg Limits

  • Specific Gravity

  • Swell/Collapse

  • Expansion Index

  • Direct Shear

  • Consolidation Test

Geotechnical Evaluation, Analyses, and Design

SPC Geotechnical, Inc. provides geotechnical evaluation, analyses, and design on an as-needed basis which typically involves one or more of the following areas:

  • Foundation design and analysis

  • Earth retaining structures evaluation and design

  • Expansive soil pressures

  • Bearing capacity and settlement analyses

  • Slope stability analysis

  • Landslide studies

  • Seismic analyses

  • Liquefaction potential and seismic stability

Resources

Our in-house library contains extensive amounts of technical journals, historical and recent aerial photos, geologic and topographic maps, satellite mapping information and GIS data such as DRGs, DOQs, DEMs, and other reference material to support our analysis.
Review of available information is commonly conducted by SPC Geotechnical, Inc. prior to field reconnaissance. This includes review of information maintained in our project files and in-house library, as well as information obtained from outside sources, such as published and unpublished literature, governmental records, and regulatory agency documents.

Technical Illustration

SPC Geotechnical, Inc.'s graphics department is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and software to produce site plans, graphics, models, and court exhibits. Using the latest technology, we are able to create a variety of visualizations such as vector/raster overlays, contour maps, and 3D models. Our graphics are prepared either for design purposes or to convey our analyses in a manner easily understandable to non-experts.
